Dawson is 21 miles southwest of Corsicana and 50 miles south of Dallas and a short distance from Hubbard in southwestern Navarro County. The town was named for Britton Dawson, a cattle rancher and participant in the battle of San Jacinto, who arrived in the area from Alabama in 1847. Dawson became a thriving town when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway built a narrow-gauge line from Corsicana to Waco making Dawson the supply and shipping center for local farmers who grew cotton and other crops. Whitney is located approximately 35 miles north of Waco, 70 miles southwest of Dallas Fort Worth and is home to one of the best recreational lakes in the State of Texas.
